King of the Wild Frontier.

Davy Crockett was one of my childhood heros, and I have Fess Parker to thank for that. I am saddened to learn that he died today at age 85.

I was born far to late to enjoy the coon skin cap craze of the fifties, but as a young boy I loved watching the Disney movies in which Mr. Parker portrayed Davy Crockett. I remember the thrill of the keel boat race against Mike Fink, and I remember feeling sadness coupled with fierce pride as the screen went black as Davy Crockett was overwhelmed by Mexican soldiers at the Alamo.

I guess I owe Fess Parker credit for teaching me that I may not have any choice about going down, but I can damn sure go down swinging.
