Thoughts on cold showers.

First off, while far from pleasant they're not intolerable.

Having a heater in the bathroom helps.  I installed that thing to make winter mornings more bearable but it has also come in handy lately.  Nothing like hot air to make cold water just a bit more tolerable.

A glass of bourbon makes the experience a little easier to deal with.  Being a little tossed makes just not give a damn and since alcohol tends to make you feel hot anyway the cold is easier to ignore.

On The Range #74: IDPA Flashlight Match

I shot IDPA last night.  It was fun.  The stages were large and complicated because we were shooting the same stages as the club's Tactical Carbine Championship match that is this weekend.

The first stage I shot involved engaging a target from within an old mail jeep with 6 rounds and then engaging multiple targets on the run from various cover.  There was so much going on that I ended up with a couple of procedurals for shooting targets out of sequence and for leaving cover with an empty gun.

All of the stages were complicated.  Two were shot completely in the dark.

I'M GOING TO PUT THIS IN CAPS SO YOU PAY ATTENTION.  IF YOU CARRY A GUN FOR DEFENSIVE USE THEN FIND AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHOOT IN THE DARK USING A FLASHLIGHT.  IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT.

I'm lucky enough that I can shoot any time I want on my own property. I think I'm going to spend a couple of evenings over the next month to shoot a few strings of fire in the late evenings using a flashlight.  I'm also going to install some night sights as soon as possible.  Even with a flashlight picking up the front sight can be difficult and I want to make it as easy as possible.

I'm thinking of picking up a light to throw on my rail as well and upgrading my holster.  Maybe some CT laser grips too.  Being blind scares the shit out of me and last night moving around all those barriers and having to work to find targets that I'd already seen on the walk through was a hell of an eye opener.  Then finding them and struggling to find the front sight because my grip is all wrong because I've also got a handheld flashlight?  Hell, no!

IDPA may be just a game but it's a hell of a better place to learn these lessons than in the middle of a gun fight!

Update on Murphy's latest visit

I managed to get the supply line to my water heater disconnected and capped.  It took a couple of trips back and forth to Lowe's but I managed it.  Now I've got cold water anyway.

An examination of the tank tells me it's time for a new one so next Friday (payday) I'm going to pick one up. I may do it Thursday.  We'll see.  I'll manage the installation somehow.  I'm no plumber but it doesn't look to complicated.  Again, we'll see.

So, this will be two major appliances I've replaced in one month.  Not cool.  But that's life.

Mr. Murphy visited.

Something is busted on my hot water heater.  There's a very bad leak on the supply line right as it goes into the tank.  Hopefully it's the connection and and not the tank itself.  Fuck me, I'm not a damned plumber.

Got to get it fixed ASAP because I've got no water until I do.  I swear if I build a house there will be fucking disconnects EVERYWHERE.

Two unrelated things you should check out.

I've been wearing a belt I got from The Belt Man for about a month now.  Love it.  My only complaint was the long turn around but that's pretty typical with fine leather goods and it was worth the wait.  It's been holding my Glock 17 and double mag holder with no issues.  Looks good too.

This past Friday night I went with a friend to see End of Watch.  Very gritty cop movie.  I highly recommend it.  In a nutshell two LAPD officers get inadvertently tangled up with the cartels and it gets bad.  The characters were very believable as real, imperfect human beings.

An offer I couldn't refuse.

I'm not a big charity person.  I don't donate a lot of money.  I hate it when kids stand outside WalMart begging for change for their baseball team.  Bake some damn cookies or something!

Anyway, that said, I've wanted to kick a little cash into someones Kilted To Kick Cancer fund.  I wasn't sure who to give to.  My donation isn't going to be huge but the I'm actually feeling comfortable enough financially where rather than just wanting too, I'll actually do it.  So, who's fund to drop it in?

Well, Evyl Robot got my attention and my cash.  The lovely Jennifer in a vinyl catsuit?  Yes, Please!  Go donate to make this happen!

The way it goes.

Picked up a little net book from my sister today.  She needed cash and I've been looking for something for browsing and blogging that I can take anywhere.  The price was right so I snapped it up.  Spent most of this evening removing the bloatware from it so I can get a little better performance.

In other news, I think my freezer has shit the bed.  Well, that's the way it goes.  I'll see how it looks tomorrow and if it's well and truly dead I'll look into a new refrigerator or maybe just a stand alone freezer.
