Looked at an AK today.

It was the first time I ever held one.  It was one of the Saigas with the black furniture.  Kind of heavy.  I wouldn't mind having one, but for $800?  I can get a decent AR for that and I've already got a pile of magazines.  I thought AKs were supposed to be cheap?  They had another for $475, but it had the dinky metal butt-stock.  No thanks.

Sigh.  I guess I'll just buy another AR when I get the scratch together.

Also got another look at a GSG 1911-22.  I still like it, but the place I was at wants about $30 more than the last one I looked at.

Classic Arms has the cheap ones.

Seems I recall seeing Saigas online in the $400 range. That's in "sporter" configuration. You can get a kit to do the conversion for about $100. Looks like something anyone with a little mechanical skill could accomplish.

Check out Arms of America. The Gun Dudes are high on them.

Meh... I didn't buy em when they were $69 and I'm sure as hell not buying one now.

Thanks for all the links and suggestions. I'll have to check those out.

NFO, I don't know why, but every once in a while I just want to get one. If I can get one cheap, it's something to just say, "I've got one," otherwise I'm not interested.

Don't underestimate the AK. There a good 'down and dirty' weapon in a pinch. The suckers work. Own three just because the liberals hate them. The Saiga is just a high class AK, nothing special. Besides, I'd want on just because 'the high ruler' wants them banned.

Part of why I want one is to test the reputation. If I can pick one up in the $400-$600 range I'm going to abuse the hell out of it and see if it really lives up to the reputation as being a reasonably accurate (minute of torso) rifle that does not fail. If it can live up to that I'm happy to have one and use it.

I have no issue with cheap guns, if they work. I've got a sub $500 1911 that works better than either my $800 or $1200 1911s ever did with less than $50 of aftermarket parts in it.

I don't like em because that is yet ANOTHER caliber I'd need to buy ammo for, they aren't that accurate without a lot of mods (giving Stephen credit for operation), and parts quality and availability are iffy... I have shot em, and been shot AT by em, if they'd been good shots/accurate I wouldn't be here!

Well, it's going to be an AR first anyway.

LOL- Smart move (my opinion)
